What Pattaya nightlife actually is
Most of Pattaya’s nightlife is built around its adult scene, and many visitors come for exactly that. The distinction between a beer bar, a go-go bar and a club matters more to your night than the city’s reputation.
The Thai-English slang “boom boom” is part of that reputation.
The venue types you’ll meet:
- Beer bars are open-fronted bars where staff chat with customers, and you’ll see them everywhere.
- Go-go bars are indoor bars with dancers on a stage. They are concentrated on Walking Street and LK Metro.
- “Short-time” bars are small bars known for their upstairs rooms. That’s the reputation Soi 6 is built on.
- Clubs and live-music bars run late, mostly on and around Walking Street.
Two terms you’ll hear:
- Lady drink: a drink you buy for a member of staff. It costs more than your own drink, so always ask the price first.
- Bar fine: a fee a bar charges when a staff member leaves the venue with a customer.
The four streets
- Walking Street is the headline strip: car-free from 19:00 to 03:00, about 780 m long, loud and neon. It is busiest late, around 10pm to midnight.
- Soi 6 is one short lane of small bars between Beach Road and Second Road. It’s busiest in the afternoon and early evening, and it’s blunt about what it is.
- LK Metro is an L-shaped lane of bars, go-go bars and small hotels off Soi Buakhao. It is smaller, cheaper and less intense than Walking Street.
- Soi Buakhao is the long everyday street of beer bars, markets and budget hotels, with Tree Town’s live-music beer garden in the middle.
What drinks cost
Typical 2026 prices. Walking Street is the most expensive; the beer bars of Soi Buakhao are the cheapest.

Draught beer is often the cheapest drink in a go-go bar, and happy hours cut prices in many beer bars. Every bar sets its own prices, so the menu in front of you is the one that counts.
Rules that save you money
- Ask the price first, for your drink and for any drink you buy for someone else.
- Pay as you go. Check the bill before it builds up.
- Ask for an itemised bill and check it before paying.
- Carry a fixed amount of cash. Leave the cards at the hotel, and never let a card leave your sight.
- Walk past touts offering free shows, free entry or special prices. They are paid to bring you in.
- Don’t photograph staff. Streets and signs are fine; people are not, unless they agree.
- Decline politely. Say no clearly and keep moving if you do not want to stop.
Your first night, step by step
- Eat first. Walking Street’s seafood restaurants and the food stalls on the side streets are options for a meal before you start drinking.
- Walk before you sit. Look along the street before choosing a bar. On Soi Buakhao, choose a section rather than treating the whole road as a single short strip.
- Pick a bar with prices on show. Check the menu before ordering, then compare it with your bill.
- Decide tonight’s cash at the hotel, and carry only that.
- Watch the bill slips. Many bars drop the slip for each drink into a small cup in front of you. Glance at it every round, or pay as you go.
- Get home by ride-hailing. Check the pickup point and quoted fare in the app before confirming.
Etiquette
- “Mai ao, khrap” (no thanks; khrap is the polite ending a man uses) is a polite way to decline. Keep walking if you do not want to stop.
- Staff are working. Be polite, keep your hands to yourself, and don’t haggle over the price of a drink.
- No photos of people. Streets and neon signs are fine; faces are not, unless someone agrees.
- Keep disputes calm. If a bill looks wrong, ask for it itemised and go through it line by line. Never square up to door staff: step outside and call the Tourist Police on 1155.
If you only want a drink
You can choose a bar for a drink without buying drinks for anyone else. Leave if the attention is unwelcome. Walking Street’s seafood restaurants and live-music bars, and Tree Town’s beer garden on Soi Buakhao, are easy places to sit and watch without being drawn in.
Dry days
The Buddhist holidays covered by alcohol-sale restrictions are Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asalha Bucha, Khao Phansa and Ok Phansa.
Buddhist holy-day alcohol restrictions have exemptions for qualifying hotels and licensed entertainment venues. Check the date and your chosen venue before planning a night around it; do not assume a whole street is open or closed.
Nightlife through the year
Pattaya has three seasons. December to February is hot and dry, and the most comfortable time to be out at night. March and April are hot and humid. May to November is the rainy season, wettest in September and October.
Plan a way home that still works in heavy rain, and keep your hotel address available offline.
Safety
Check bills, secure your valuables in crowds and keep your drink in sight. Do not accept open drinks from strangers.

The law, briefly
Running a prostitution business is an offence in Thailand. Do not mistake a street’s adult reputation for permission to ignore the law.
Criticising the Thai monarchy is illegal. Thailand has strict laws against drug use, possession and trafficking.
