Trade-off: Noise. Bars and live music run late, so the room you pick matters more than the hotel's star rating.

Trade-off: No beach, and public transport barely reaches it.

Trade-off: The main nightlife streets are a ride away, and the last rides back late at night cost more effort.

North of the city around Wong Amat Beach: resorts, condos and a local feel, well away from the main nightlife.
Trade-off: Every night out means a ride into town and back.

The northern end of the bay around Terminal 21, with easy access to Sukhumvit Road, restaurants and shopping, and Soi 6 at its southern edge.
Trade-off: The beach at this end is the least appealing stretch of the coast, and Walking Street is a ride away.

The green, hilly residential headland between Pattaya Beach and Jomtien, home to the Big Buddha temple.
Trade-off: It is hilly and spread out: you will use taxis or a scooter for most things.

The inland street two blocks back from the beach, packed with budget hotels, bars, markets and daily-life shops, with LK Metro and Tree Town in the middle.
Trade-off: Bar noise, busy weekends and poor pavements; Beach Road is a walk away.

The southern end of Beach Road around the Walking Street arch and Bali Hai Pier, where the biggest nightlife strip and the island ferries are.
Trade-off: It is the loudest, busiest part of town after dark; staying on the strip itself means late-night noise.
