Getting around Pattaya

Baht buses (songthaews)

Pattaya’s shared taxis are pickup trucks with two benches in the back. Everyone calls them baht buses; the Thai name is songthaew. A ride costs 15–20 baht, depending on distance (since 10 April 2026).

The main loop. On Beach Road they run south. Before the Walking Street entrance they turn left, then left again onto Second Road, and head north. Other routes run along Soi Buakhao and to Jomtien and Naklua.

How to ride:

1. Wave one down with your arm out and palm facing down.
2. Climb in the back. Don’t discuss a destination.
3. Press the buzzer to stop.
4. Pay at the passenger window. Hand over the fare rather than asking what it is.

The one trap: if you ask the driver to take you somewhere off his route, you’re chartering the whole truck, at a charter price. Agree that price before you set off.

Ride-hailing

Ride-hailing apps work in Pattaya for cars and motorbike taxis, and they’re the easiest way home at night, especially from Soi Buakhao or Jomtien to a hotel elsewhere. You see the price before you confirm.

Motorbike taxis

They take you anywhere, not just along a route. Always ask the price first.

Walking

Check the actual route before choosing to walk. Walking Street is about 780 m from end to end; Soi Buakhao covers a longer road with several connections towards Second Road. Pavements are often poor, with high kerbs, obstructions and parked motorbikes, so wear proper shoes.

Show your driver

Many drivers read Thai more easily than English transliterations. Show them the Thai name, or tap “Open in Google Maps” on any area or street page for a map pin.
